Brutalist is full of surprises

Adrien Brody’s Laszlo, a Jewish architect escaping the clutches of a bloody Europe, slips into America’s welcoming arms – or faces them – in a frenetic opening sequence that evokes a literal birth from the Statue of Liberty. His journey becomes a constant navigation of life’s variety of horrors: existential, professional, familial, intimate—never taking his eyes off the prize of great achievement and never appreciating the value of that prize to begin with. Is it the shameful discovery that his success was born not in spite of his trauma, but because of it?

I feel like it’s based on an old novel – a mystery tome that I’d like to mine for some of the details the movie refuses to share.

This aging man’s search for meaning becomes ours. And any better understanding of Laszlo’s arrival, his families' machinations, his side and lack of roots, for better or worse, is up to us to build.
